October is Early Action and Early Decision time. Here are some things to think about as you make this important decision. Many colleges are adding a second round of Early Decision/Early Action options, so make sure to work this into your planning schedule.

We recently attended the College Board update on the new SAT. For juniors who will be taking the new SAT beginning in March of 2005, learn which colleges will be requiring the writing test as part of their application. Note that this list changes daily, so keep it handy when you start planning your standardized testing for colleges.

Do you depend too much on magazine rankings to make your college list? Learn why these rankings are yet another way to hype the process of college admissions as fifteen liberal arts college presidents speak out on the recently released college rankings.

More news...

Curious about the new SAT starting in March 2005? Read more and remember to keep it in perspective, it is only one part of the application process.

Learn which colleges are using the Common Application this year and which are using it exclusively. Online applications either through the Common Application or on individual college websites will make the application process easier for you and will speed up the review process.

Do not let the essay process become your adversary. Remember that this is an excellent (and surprisingly short) way to show the colleges a side of you they do not see elsewhere in your application. Here are some things to think about as you start the process.

Western

FOCUSING ON WASHINGTON THIS MONTH, are you considering a college with small classes and individualized attention where the faculty is engaged in your learning, but want to stay here in Washington State? Consider the University of Washington Honors Program. This program offers personalized advising, and access to unique study abroad, internship and research opportunities.

Whitman College, a Washington selection from the "Colleges That Change Lives" listing is a small, liberal arts college where you can count on small classes, dinners at your professor's homes and challenging academics. The largest class at Whitman is thirty students and it is hard to slip through the cracks here.

Forty-five percent of students at Whitman study abroad. Below is a photo of "La Maison Francaise" on the Whitman campus where students can live, eat and learn the French way. With many off to law school after graduation, the debate team at Whitman consistently ranks among the top in the nation. Outdoor activities are a big part of life at Whitman as evidenced by their nationally ranked snow-board and cycling teams.

Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma offers a wide range of music programs for the serious music student with performances in the beautiful Lagerquist Concert Hall. A strong sense of community and excellent support services make this an excellent choice for students looking closer to home. Another option locally is the University of Puget Sound which draws students from around the nation.

If you are planning to visit Western Washington University, make sure and enjoy the panini in the new athletic facility. Students can enjoy this beautiful new facility between classes which may include environmental science, education and vehicle research. The large photo above is of the "Little Green People" who adorn the campus center. Further east at Washington State University you might consider the Edward R. Murrow School of Communications, culinary arts, pre-veterinary medicine, the music composition program with one of the top recording studios in the nation, or high energy physics at the state-of-the-art Impact Lab in the new Institute for Shock Physics.

As you finalize your college list, make sure to talk to the representatives from these colleges at the upcoming Seattle National College Fair November 5th at 6th at the Washington State Convention Center. The Visual and Performing Arts College Fair will be held the day before on November 4th at the University of Washington. A list of colleges in attendance is available on the website.
