Be prepared for college interviews by answering these four questions:

  • What is important to you, and why?
  • What do you most enjoy doing and why?
  • Why does this college interest you?
  • If you have a defined career goal, why are you choosing to do this?

Many colleges prefer online applications as the information arrives earlier, and this format can help you avoid omissions. Remember to print a hard copy of your application before you hit the send button so that you have a record of your submission.

Do you want to get the inside scoop on the college you are considering? Go to the college web site and see if there is an "ask a student" option and some are publishing student blogs. Many colleges are starting to add this feature to their sites.

October included visits to several colleges in California starting at Loyola Marymount, a quick drive from LAX and overlooking the Pacific Ocean. One unique program is Film and Recording Arts offering internships in the Los Angeles area and a new building on the way. The Sunken Garden, pictured above, is at the center of this expansive campus.

Our next stop was Chapman University, where new construction was everywhere on campus. Theater, dance and film all play a big part at this suburban college.

The five Claremont undergraduate schools—Harvey Mudd, Claremont McKenna, Pitzer, Pomona, and Scripps—were next on the schedule and together make up an interesting amalgamation of programs that complement one another. These five small colleges share athletic teams, classes (over 2,500) and many facilities including the theater (see photo below), to give the campus a much larger feel.

Harvey Mudd College is all about top engineering, math and science with a liberal arts component as well. A unique feature is the "Clinic Experience" where students are funded for research projects worldwide with over 35 leading edge technology companies.

Claremont McKenna College prides itself in the Athenaeum which is home to invited speakers who are leaders in their fields. Students can sign up to join these speakers for dinner four nights a week. CMC has a top debate team and values leadership in many areas including politics, international studies, business and government. Internships and research on campus and overseas are important at this academically challenging liberal arts college.

Pomona College was created in the image of an East Coast liberal arts college and today is one of the most dynamic and stimulating colleges in the US. Students here enjoy a rich tradition of intellectual pursuit in the California sunshine. The dorms at Pomona are pictured below.

Pitzer College has 40 different majors and many of the graduates go on to teach, join the Peace Corps, and attend graduate school. The programs are interdisciplinary and cross-cultural, and many students study overseas during their education.

Scripps College is a women's college with a long tradition of developing leaders in many fields.
