Evergreen

We recently returned from a counselor tour of colleges and universities in the southeast—Vanderbilt, University of the South, Emory, Georgia Institute of Technology, Davidson College, Wake Forest, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke, William and Mary, University of Richmond, University of Virginia, George Washington, and American.

Northwest students are of great interest to these schools which are looking for geographic diversity. Many of these colleges have a unique combination of historic and modern facilities surrounded by magnificent natural beauty. An example of this is Davidson, a selective liberal arts college in North Carolina (above photo) with small class sizes and a high level of faculty involvement.

George Washington University has added a second location on the Mt. Vernon campus. Shuttles are provided between the urban Washington DC campus which is a few blocks from both the White House and the State Department (photo to right). Both GW and American University often draw on active and retired federal officials who live in the area as lecturers or instructors for public affairs courses; world-class internship positions are also available in the DC area.

Emory University in Atlanta combines a top research university and a liberal arts college allowing for great opportunities for undergraduates to work in research in a number of fields. Vanderbilt University in Nashville allows students to “shop for classes” among their strong programs in music, engineering and liberal arts.

NEW BOOKS AND VIDEOS!

A great book to read before heading to college is Making the Most of College: Students Speak their Mind by Richard J. Light from Harvard University Press. Just published: Playing the Game: Inside Athletic Recruiting in the Ivy League by Chris Lincoln, Jay Fiedler. What does it take to get into a top liberal arts college? PBS takes a behind-the-scenes look at the admissions process at Amherst College. Click here for a link to the program, which aired on June 22, 2004.

"Colleges That Change Lives" comes to Seattle/Bellevue Sunday, August 8, 2004. CTLC schools are a group of distinctive colleges and universities that should not be overlooked. See the June newsletter for more info.
