In May, we had visits to our office from admissions representatives at both Kenyon College in Ohio and Wheaton College in Massachusetts. Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts (a suburb of Boston) is a liberal arts college that focuses on hands-on learning including internships, research, overseas study, and volunteer activities. The Filene Center for Work and Learning is the centerpiece of this method of learning as all students work on a plan to combine their liberal arts education with real world careers. Student portfolios include performance reviews, journals, and goals combined to achieve action, reflection and documentation. Wheaton is the only non-sectarian coed, undergraduate
college in the Boston area. It is rural enough to allow for good running
and cycling opportunities Kenyon College is a selective liberal arts college with a strong sense of community. The collaborative nature of life on campus combined with a friendly atmosphere lends itself to a relaxed lifestyle. The faculty are encouraged to live close to campus and you can expect to see them at most college events. Kenyon (a.k.a. The Writers College) is known for one of the best creative writing programs in the country, and is home to the notable Kenyon Review which can be previewed in their popular summer Creative Writing Program for high school students. The curriculum requirements are very flexible with limited distribution requirements, making Kenyon a place for self-directed and motivated students. It is home to many happy over-achievers who enjoy an interdisciplinary approach to learning. See the May newsletter for more new information.
