New in June

We recently met with the admissions representative for our area from the University of Rochester (photo right), a private university located in Rochester, New York. This year they have enrolled the largest group of students ever from Washington state.

Some of the factors that make the University of Rochester a good match for students include: less than 1000 freshmen are enrolled, with a total of only 3900 undergraduates; 97% of classes are faculty taught and small; Rochester is the third smallest research university, following Caltech and Rice; 70% of undergraduates carry out research; the school has a unique curriculum that is interest-driven; over 70 study abroad programs are offered;the "Take Five Scholars Program" is also available—a fifth year tuition-free opportunity to study another field—as well as the "Kauffman Entrepreneurial Year." Popular programs at Rochester include biological sciences, political science, music, optics, cognitive sciences, neuroscience, classics and religion.

We also attended the recent counselor meeting at the University of Washington and received an update on the newly-admitted class and an overview of the first year of the comprehensive, holistic review process. With more admissions staff added, each application received at least two complete reviews, giving essays and all other material a high level of individual attention. It is clear that senior year is getting more attention, and maintaining rigor and grades is paramount as the UW wants students to have a high level of preparation upon enrollment.

Updates on programs at UW included details of the new Common Book initiative for students, faculty and staff and the new undergraduate program in Digital Arts and Experimental Media (DXArts). DXArts is a unique undergraduate program preparing students for the future, with scientists and artists working together in areas such as computer science, design, robotics, art, dance and medicine. You can see some of the recent projects from students in DXArts here. Mentoring is a key component of this rigorous program. The new Bioengineering-Genome Sciences building was opened in March 2006 (photo right) and is home to advanced research facilities as well as both the undergraduate and graduate programs.
